Yes, Hawaii is known for its great beaches. And true, there’s nothing quite like basking under the warm Hawaiian sun and feeling your cares drift away with each gentle wave that laps at your feet. But there’s a lot more to the Aloha State than soaking up some sun. You can get out and do something!

You can explore Hawaii on land, air or sea and take advantage of all the state has to offer.

For hikers, there are fabulous nature trails on every Hawaiian island, including treks for beginners and experts. On Maui, Haleakala is revered as one of the state’s best hiking spots. A favorite hike on Oahu is the 45-minute climb to the top of Diamond Head, where visitors are rewarded with sweeping views of Waikiki, Honolulu and the Pacific Ocean. On the Big Island, head to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park and take on the Kilauea Iki Trail, a five-mile adventure that begins at the Thurston Lava Tube.

If hiking is not your thing and you would rather pedal your way through Hawaii, you will not be left out. Haleakala offers a downhill ride that is very enjoyable in both exercise and scenery. Then there is the Garden of the Gods on Lanai. This looks like the surface of the moon with very colorful rocks.

Horseback riding is always a popular outdoor activity. Enjoy “happy trails” on the Big Island, where you can be a paniolo (cowboy) for a day at places like Parker Ranch, one of the largest ranches (175,000 acres) in the United States.

There is even skiing on Hawaii. Yes, you read right, skiing! The top of Mauna Kea will usually surprise you with snow from November to April. Be prepared, however, these slopes should be reserved for the most advance skiers. Amateurs should try something else on Hawaii.

And, of course, there is the ocean. This is an area that should not be overlooked. Believe it or not, some people have gone to the island and never stepped foot in the water! Gentle waves along with the shallow water make learning how to surf at Waikiki Beach perfect. Hanauma bay offers snorkeling while off Lanai’s south shore are the Cathedrals, which is a wonderful SCUBA diving location. Deep Sea fishing can be found off Kailua-Kona and the Tuna and Marlin are ready to be caught. If you would like to kayak, head on over to Kauai and go along the Napali Coast for some breath taking views.

To see all the beauty of Hawaii from the top, try hang gliding or helicopter at one of the many providers on the island. Oahu even has skydiving to offer you. There, a licensed instructor will show you how to not panic when you jump out of a plane at 13,000 feet so you can open your shoot on time. Do not worry, though, it will be a tandem jump, and if you do go blank, the instructor will pull the cord for you.

The list of outdoor activities goes on and on: camping, hunting, clay shooting, sailing, windsurfing, jogging, whale watching, parasailing and so much more. There’s a whole world of adventure awaiting you in the Hawaiian Islands. Just go for it!

Sky diving is classed as an activity that often times warrants renting equipment instead of purchasing it because of the sheer cost of getting everything that is needed for an activity that you may only attempt once.

Sky diving equipment rarely ever goes wrong and weather conditions seldom cause accidents. It is not an activity to be taken lightly, and having the absolute best equipment is a must for obvious reasons. The equipment, though high on the list of importance for safety reasons, is not the main focus for people who see partake of the sport on a regular basis.

You can and should always check out the weather before experience and be prepared in advance for any unforseen conditions.

This type of extreme sport requires you to be in very good health with no major health problems or disabling conditions. A visit with your doctor prior to your experience will provide you with the most accurate information regarding your health, and your doctor can advise you if sky diving is something you should undertake.

Another name given to this extreme sport is parachuting. Technically, this is the act of jumping from a high place, usually an airplane, and safely returning to the ground with the aid of a parachute. The sport should be undertaken by those who want to experience the thrill of free flight and, even though it is technically falling and not flying, it is unquestionably the closest to a flying experience for humans.

The sky diving experience is one that invokes a variety of emotions. Many people only attempt it once, while others make a career out of it. Anyone that wants to attempt this for the first time needs to firstly understand the basic rules and all the risks that exist. Knowing all about your equipment is more than essential to your success. It is for this reason that you should take inspecting your equipment seriously as you plan your adventure. Never take your equipment for granted.

You will want to look into your own comfort while participating, but also, the essential is the safety equipment used. In fact, most companies that offer their services for taking people soaring skyward and advising them on the moment to drop, include the price of equipment rental in their fee.

The equipment is extremely reliable when operated properly, and will most likely result in a safe and exciting jump. If you’re thinking that you’d like to give it a go, you should see about going on a couple of jumps in tandem with an experienced sky diver.

It is a very popular sport, and many people end up trying it at least once. Many who initially showed fear and trepidation, are now the ones that cannot get enough of the experience. As you leave the airplane behind and accelerate up to 120 mph (200 kph) in the vast open skies, you will realize why some say that sky diving is the most thrilling adventure experience in the world.

What are the risks?
As with any sport there is always the risk of injury. However. with the proper instruction. the right equipment. and the development of the right techniques. skydiving can be the safest and most personally fulfilling hobby you could choose. WARNING: there is the risk of addiction!!! This is one sport that just never gets boring!

What would be the best training method for me?
It is very important that you first consider your options here. There are three types of training available.

The first is the Tandem Jump.
Tandem jumping is probably the most popular way to make that first jump. The ground training for a tandem jump last for only about 30 minutes for starters. Instead of a parachute rig attached to your back. you will have a highly trained and knowledgeable instructor (with a chute strapped to his back) securely strapped to you. The instructor will maintain complete control of the jump from the time you step out of the plane until your feet are once again planted firmly on terra-firma (the ground).

The next method of training is Static Line.
For this method of training. you will be required to complete four to five hours of ground training before making that first jump. After ground training you will be taken to an altitude of about 3000 feet where you will simply step out and fall. A line attached to the plane will deploy your parachute for you. After two good static line jumps. you will begin free fall practice.

The third method of training is the Accelerated Free Fall.
For all you adrenalin junkies out there this is most likely going to be the method for you; free fall on the first jump!!! After completing the required ground training you will jump into a plane and take off. Once the proper altitude is reached. you and two instructors. who will maintain hands-on contact with you at all times. will jump back out of that airplane into true free fall. The instructors will assist you in maintaining proper orientation. as well as making sure you pull the ripcord at the right time.

Is that all you need to know? Not by a long shot!! Do the research. Call around to some of your local drop zones and talk to some pro’s. and get enrolled in a jump school. The next “step” is up to you.

Nowadays, skydiving is related to every major branch of human activities, from action movies, soft drinks commercials and reality shows, to military activity. It is seen very often and almost everywhere in the world.

The main characteristic that draws anyone’s attention is the extreme nature of this sport. Leaping out from a plane and falling through air at speeds over 120 mph is definitely an edge.

For the first – timers, the best and most popular way to take a leap is the tandem jump. This procedure requires for the student to leap from the plane strapped to his instructor and fall with the instructor’s parachute (which is big enough to carry both your and the instructor’s weight and is controlled by the instructor).

At first sight, there is a great resemblance between a simple jump and a tandem jump, but in reality, there are several big differences:

    * Unlike a simple jump, when an experienced skydiver will simply leap from the plane, the tandem jump requires more maneuvers for the leap in order to synchronize the student and the instructor.

    * In the tandem jumps, the speeds of falling through air are greater than in the simple jump because of the higher weight of the tandem jumpers (180 – 200 mph instead of 120 mph). This speed is reduced with a drogue parachute of around 4 feet in diameter which is pulled by the instructor immediately after the leap and is kept through the entire free fall.

    * After the free fall, when the altitude of deployment is reached, the instructor or the student pulls a cord that releases the drogue and pulls out the parachute from the container.

    * The student and the instructor land together.

When choosing the method you’ll first skydive you have to consider how much time you have and how much cash you’ve got. Off course, how brave you are is another factor and depending on these factors you’ll have to choose one of three methods for your first jump.If what you want is to fly freely you have to go for accelerated free fall. Just want a nice ride, tandem might be the best choice. If you just want a quick ride you can go for static line.
