Home Business Coaching

Saturday, September 26th, 2009

Are you one of those budding entrepreneurs who are planning to set up your own home business, or have already taken the plunge? Home business is considered one of the most profitable ways to do business. However, it does need some guidance during the initial period to get a good start. And this is where home business coaching comes in. The requirements of a home business and a regular business are very different, and what works for the latter may not work for the former. Hence, there is a difference in both the coaching techniques. A home businessperson needs a coach who understands all his/her clients needs. Thus, home business coaching is designed according to individual needs.

Who is an ideal home business coach?

An ideal home business coach would be a person who is currently into home business coaching, and knows all that is required to make a home business successful. Someone who used to be into home business coaching years ago would not be a suitable candidate, as the nature of conducting business has changed a lot in the past decade. Thus, a person who is not in touch with the present business world would not be cognizant of the new techniques required to ensure the success of the business.

A home business coach should be willing to work and coach you on a one-on-one basis. Also, the coach should help his/her client acquire all the core principles required to run a home business. Once you know these core principles, you can implement them at your own pace. Plus, it will also help you to do things independently, even when the coach is not around.

The most important thing is that the home business coach you hire should be someone who has expertise in your field of business. Just like you would not hire a swimming coach to teach you to skydive, thus you should hire a coach according to your needs. Ideally, he or she should be someone who has been in the same field and therefore knows all the risks and the potential involved, and thus be able to guide you to avoid all the pitfalls.

Of course, there are some common factors that are taught to every entrepreneur, whether in regular or home business, such as team management, organizational skills, time management, business strategies and leadership skills. The coach also challenges personal assumptions, which result in the client continuing to do things that are not working, often failing to see the solutions to problems, which are quite apparent.

Inculcating leadership qualities is another very important aspect that should be looked into while choosing a home business coach. Home entrepreneurs often find making the transition from being the person who has created the service or product, to the person who takes charge of the company. A coach can help such entrepreneurs to create and communicate business plans, assign responsibility to others, and devise a long-term strategy.

Home-based business coaching is an unlicensed profession, which means that almost anyone can call herself or himself a coach. Hence, when searching for a coach, it is advisable to look for experience, coaching techniques, and the assessment methodologies he or she has. The aim of any coach is to make his/her client more resourceful and confident. A good coach will evaluates the strong and weak points of the client and use appropriate techniques to eliminate the weaknesses while honing the strengths.

Falling Home Prices Have Little Effect on Property Taxes

Saturday, September 26th, 2009

Copyright (c) 2008 Troy Foote

Many homeowners have been taken by surprise when the value of their home suddenly seemed to hit freefall. It would certainly seem as though there should be one advantage to dropping home prices; however. Many homeowners assumed that when the value of their homes fell, their property taxes would as well. This has not been the case in many areas; however.

In some cases; homeowners have been shocked to discover that not only have their property tax bills not decreased, they have actually increased in some cases. This has been quite a surprise for homeowners as they struggle to understand why they are paying more in taxes on homes that are not worth as much as they were just a year ago.

The reason for this relates to the complex manner in which property taxes are calculated in many areas. One of the biggest problems, especially in Nevada, is the fact that property tax increases were capped during the housing boom. During this time home values skyrocketed rapidly. Today, the values of homes in these same areas are falling; however, the decreases have not actually been enough to compensate for the increases of just a few years ago. Consequently, the values of homes would need to decrease sharply over a short period of time in order for property tax bills to decrease. While declining property values has certainly been a problem, they simply have not decreased enough in many areas to provide any relief from property tax bills.

As the rate of defaulted loans and foreclosures continue to soar in many locations, numerous counties have discovered that the rate of unpaid properties taxes is also on the rise. The metro Detroit area, in particular, is experiencing a record high rate of unpaid property taxes. Detroit is currently considered to be one of the worst housing markets in the United States based on the decline of housing prices and increase of foreclosures. The lack of jobs and weak economy in the greater Detroit area are considered to be the primary factors contributing to the housing crash in the area.

Even if property owners are paying their monthly mortgage payments on time they could still be at risk for losing their properties through foreclosure if they fail to pay their property taxes for three years in a row. In such situations, the county would then take control of the home and auction it off to pay the balance of taxes owed. Counties in the Detroit area are currently struggling to recoup hundreds of millions of dollars in unpaid property taxes. The issue has had significant repercussions on counties in the greater Detroit area.

Property owners who find they are behind on the property taxes can take some steps to stave off foreclosure. The first step is to begin making payments on their taxes. Many homeowners make the mistake of thinking they are doomed if they cannot pay off all of the taxes owed and thus pay nothing at all. Keep in mind that making any payment, even if you cannot pay all of the taxes, is better than paying nothing at all. If you are not able to pay all of the taxes; at least try to pay off your oldest taxes first. Remember that taxes which remain unpaid for three years consecutively places you at risk for foreclosure. Pay off the oldest taxes first to combat this risk.

You might also check with your county to determine whether you may be eligible for an extension for property taxes, which are unpaid. In some situations, the county treasurer may be able to grant you an exemption for your taxes if you are able to demonstrate extreme hardship. It is best to do this as early as possible; however, as there are commonly deadlines for the exemption applications.

In addition, check with your mortgage company or bank to find out whether they offer any type of program or loan that can provide you with the money needed to cover your taxes. It is never in the best interest of the bank to have the county take over the property, so they are often willing to work with the homeowner to avoid having this happen. Keep in mind; however, that when you do this will you will be taking on an increased debt burden.

Now what if you are faced with Foreclosure. Do you know what the first thing is that you should do? It is in your best interest to learn NOW.

The Flavors of Fear and How to Choose the One That’s Yours

Friday, September 25th, 2009

We are frequently told about how we should ignore fear and go for what we want and to some extent that’s really true. However, I think fear (like ice-cream) has more than one flavour and some fears can actually help us. There are times when fear is appropriate…like when we are faced with physical danger or someone is threatening one of our nearest and dearest. I like to distinguish between four types of fear.

Raw, visceral fear: This is the fear we experience if a threat to our own lives or the lives of our loved ones is imminent. I believe most of us in the Western world will rarely experience this, except perhaps in a car crash. Our instincts bring us through this one.

Irrelevant fear: For example, I am afraid of jumping out of a helicopter or going skydiving. However I do not have the slightest desire to do either of those things so the fear does not impinge on me. To be honest, this is one fear I certainly wouldn’t be bothered trying to overcome!

Limiting fear: When most personal development experts talk about fear, this is the one they talk about…the fear that stops us doing the things that will help us bloom and grow…going for that interview, asking that man/woman out on a date, public speaking. We know it’s a limiting fear because while it feels visceral we also feel excited and wistful about the action. People experiencing this sort of fear say stuff like “I’d love to do X, Y or X but…” and feel envious of those who do embark on those tasks. Here are some ways to get around this fear…

. Get out of your head: Talk to some supportive people about it. Speak honestly about your fears…get the fear out of your head. If you do not have some people like this in your life…sit down and write what is in your head until it begins to repeat itself. It will look a lot more manageable when it’s out of your head.

. Giant leap or tiny step?: Either decide to tackle your fear by going at it head-on. One friend of mine decided to conquer her fear of public speaking by giving a workshop for over 80 people…Another way is to take a tiny step. The tiny step should take no longer than 5 minutes. Pick up the phone, send an e-mail, check a website, ask someone for help. This in itself can break the inertia.

. Enlist support: Other people are far more compassionate and understanding than we often give them credit for…we’ve all made mistakes and we admire people who have the honesty and vulnerability to admit they need help. Make your request as specific as possible e.g. if you have to make a speech, ask someone to listen to you rehearse and then give you positive feedback. Make sure to thank them in some way.

. Make fear your friend: I usually find that when I listen to the voice of fear, it sounds a lot like my mother warning me against potential danger. When I recognise this, it makes it much easier for me to acknowledge it but then do what I was going to do anyway!

. Useless fear: One of my favourite quotes is from Benjamin Franklin “I’ve been through a lot in my life…some of which actually happened”. This sort of fear is the product of not having enough of a rich, interesting life and an over-vivid imagination. Unfortunately, it’s also tends to be self-fulfilling. Of course one of the good by-products of this sort of fear is that when the bad thing about which we have been worrying actually happens…it’s a lot less traumatic than our mind has made it. However, it’s also an acknowledgement at some sub-conscious level that life is uncertain, unpredictable and much of what we value can be taken away from us within seconds. We have a choice then as to how we deal with this…destroy our peace of mind by trying to control this or instead begin to see this as an opportunity to be grateful and appreciate what we do have…

The Safety Of Silicone Gel Breast Implants

Friday, September 25th, 2009

Numerous studies have been conducted to see if the anecdotal claims of women about their silicone implants were verifiable by scientific evidence. These studies have found localized risks associated with all breast implants, but no conclusive evidence to support the claims against implant manufacturers as noted above. Many studies conducted by the Institute of Medicine and other experts have found no connection between implants and the diseases claimed by so many women.

The FDA has conducted a study where they conclude that extra capsular silicone (from a ruptured implant) can be associated with fibromyalgia. The study relied on a survey of 344 women who filled out surveys asking about their symptoms. Women who reported they had the symptoms were then checked to see if their implants had ruptured. Based on the women reporting symptoms and having ruptured implants, the study assumed a connection.

Unfortunately, that is how the plaintiffs prevailed in numerous lawsuits, with no evidence of a cause and effect, just a demonstration of coincidence. More recent studies have also found that women with implants are more likely to commit suicide and more likely to have certain brain cancers. These women might also be more likely to skydive, ride mechanical bulls and bark at the moon but none of the studies showed a cause and effect, just coincidence. Studies have found no link between implants and breast cancer, other than the fact that implants can interfere with detection because of interference with mammography.

Prior to the FDA approval on November 17, 2006, silicone gel breast implants were not available for general use and?women could only obtain silicone breast implants as part of an FDA-sanctioned study such as the Silicone Adjunct Study which is now closed.

As of November 17, 2006, women aged 22 and over qualify for the silicone gel breast implants manufactured by Mentor Corp. and Inamed. Not all silicone gel breast implants made by these manufacturers have been approved. According to Mentor’s website, eligibility is as follows: Mentor MemoryGel Silicone Gel-Filled Breast Implants are indicated for females for the following uses:

Breast augmentation for women at least 22 years old. Breast augmentation includes primary breast augmentation to increase the breast size, as well as revision surgery to correct or improve the result of a primary breast augmentation surgery.

Breast reconstruction. Breast reconstruction includes primary reconstruction to replace breast tissue that has been removed due to cancer or trauma or that has failed to develop properly due to a severe breast abnormality. Breast reconstruction also includes revision surgery to correct or improve the result of a primary breast reconstruction surgery.

Mentor’s silicone gel-filled breast implants, referred to as MemoryGel products, come in a variety of profiles and sizes. Mentor’s Lumera and Becker gel implants were not approved at this time. Get specific details on the available implant sizes, shapes, etc. in our manufacturer’s section

The current name “gummy bear” is given by many patients and doctors to implants that are “form-stable”. This means that they are so cohesive, that they are more a solid than a liquid. These form-stable implants have the purpose of making a longer lasting implant that maintains a more attractive and predictable shape. As such, the gel is less liquid-like and more solid-like than even today’s other cohesive silicone gel implants.

Silicon is the second most abundant element in the earth’s crust, comprising around 28% of it. It is not found in its elemental form but occurs mainly as oxides and silicates. In contrast to carbon, silicon-silicon bonds are uncommon. Natural silicon-carbon bonds are extremely rare but they can be created synthetically.

Silica is a three dimensional network of silicon dioxide, most commonly encountered as sand. Silica exists in crystalline and amorphous forms. Silica is chemically resistant at ordinary temperatures but can undergo a variety of transformations at high temperatures (greater than 500CC) and pressures. The industrial production of amorphous silica requires temperatures of 500CC and much higher temperatures are required to produce crystalline silica.

The prolonged inhalation of crystalline silica dust is associated with silicosis. Amorphous silica is much less pathogenic than crystalline forms.

Conversion of amorphous to crystalline silica cannot occur at body temperature. High purity amorphous silica is used as a reinforcing agent to increase the tear resistance of silicone rubbers used in medical devices and implants.

Silicones are synthetic polymers and are not therefore found naturally. They have a linear, repeating silicon-oxygen backbone akin to silica. However, organic groups attached directly to the silicon atoms by carbon-silicon bonds prevent formation of the three-dimensional network found in silica.

These types of compound are also known as polyorganosiloxanes. Certain organic groups can be used to link two or more of these silicon-oxygen backbones and the nature and extent of this crosslinking enables a wide variety of products to be manufactured. The most important materials used in medical implants are fluids, gels and rubbers (elastomers) whose physical and chemical properties include, amongst others, a high degree of chemical inertness, thermal stability and resistance to oxidation.

Silicone fluids (oils) are usually linear chains of polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) which have a wide range of chain lengths and molecular masses. Cyclic polydimethylsiloxanes also occur and are important intermediates in the manufacture of the linear chain fluids. They are virtually insoluble in water.

Silicone gels have lightly cross-linked polysiloxane networks, swollen with PDMS fluid to produce a cohesive mass. The PDMS fluid is not chemically bound to the crosslinked network but is retained only by physical means, as water is in a sponge, and there is a tendency for the fluid to “bleed”. The degree of cross-linking and amount of fluid affects the physical properties of the gel and the rate at which fluid “bleeds” from it. Once suitably cross-linked, silicone gels retain their form without external containment.

Silicone elastomers are extensively cross-linked and contain little free PDMS fluid. The barrier coating of breast implant shells is a special silicone elastomer which is selected specifically to minimise migration of PDMS from the implants. The tensile strength and tear resistance of silicone elastomers may be increased by addition of amorphous silica which is usually pre-treated with organosilicon compounds to enable it to be tightly incorporated into the polymer network.

Dangers of Buying Reo’s Just Out of Foreclosure

Friday, September 25th, 2009

Banks and lending institutions that own real estate that was acquired through foreclosure call these properties real estate owned or REO’s. REO’s represent a liability to lenders because of the required accounting that literally “sucks” away assets of the lenders by the requirement they have substantial cash reserves to offset any potential loss when the properties are sold. This cash requirement substantially depletes the leveraged lending ability of that specific institution so REO’s are not what any lender wants. In addition, the lender faces capital loss due to a declining real estate market.

REO’s are a fact-of-life for lenders, so much so that they have extensive infra-structure to deal with these properties and have developed ways to sell them that whips investors into a buying frenzy. As always the REO is placed on the Multiple Listing Service (MLS®) at what is assumed to be fair market value (FMV) and allowed to stay at this price for 30 – 60 days. The price is next reduced by about 10% and the results are carefully watched. If there is no action, the price will be reduced at least once more by roughly 15% – 20%. Because of the data sorting capabilities of the MLS® every time the price is reduced, investors and realtors see the price changes and look more carefully at the property.

After two price reductions, if no firm acceptable offers have been tendered, the lender will “free-fall” the price as much as 30% – 40% below what it was originally offered. This pricing will almost always get plenty of interest and contracts. However, the lender and his agent stall taking an offer and tell perspective buyers to “Give us your best and final offer”. The reality is the lender is trying to play each investor/buyer against the next to get the highest bid possible. In many cases the final sales price is well over what the lender would have taken without the bidding process.

The lender will give priority to cash offers because of the speed in closing the sale, but often they will accept conventional financing if the buyer looks good credit wise and has a substantial down payment. If there is a cash offer versus a financing offer and there is less than $5,000 difference, the lender will take the cash offer. What an investor needs to know, to get his offer accepted, is to only deal directly with the listing broker. If a buyer’s agent is used representing the investor, the commission will be split between the lender’s agent and the investor’s agent. I have personally made higher offers through a buyer’s agent who originally showed me the property and had them declined for a lower offer that was submitted directly to the lender’s agent. Simple mathematics, the lender’s agent got twice the commission taking the direct offer. Don’t let this happen to you, go t o the REO agent to begin and pay your agent separate if he brings you the deal.

Another huge issue not often mentioned in REO sales is illegal structures added without permitting. These are not title issues because they are not covered by title insurance unless the code violations are open and in the public record. So a buyer of an REO can get title insurance, but actually purchase an illegally added bedroom, bathroom, etc. and have problems when he resells the property. Some counties and cities required a “re-inspection” before title can be transferred, and these issues would become apparent to a buyer. However, the vast majority do not require re-occupancy inspections and the problem may be passed on to the buyer. Lenders do not give a warranty deed but offer a buyer a limited warranty deed which only covers the period when the lender actually owned the property – further reducing the lender’s liability for deficiencies in the property.

Buying REO’s is truly the best example of “buyer beware” and the solution is to have a certified inspector look for structural problems, permit issues and illegal additions. If the buyer does his homework and is willing to assume the risks of the unknown, unseen problems, REO’s can be rewarding purchases. The best way to acquire the properties is to decide on the highest bid you are willing to pay and not to exceed this offer despite what the “friendly” agent is telling you. Even more importantly, the actual price the lender is offering is always negotiable. If the lender says “No” to your offer, just say “What will you take?” and you will almost always save yourself thousands of dollars!

The False High of Addiction

Thursday, September 24th, 2009

The Doctor Who Had Everything

While scanning the information on the Titusonenine blog, I recently read a post entitled “A Bout With Addiction, for the Doctor Who Has Everything” that captured my interest. According to the post, Dr. G. was an anesthesiologist who became addicted to drugs. After entering a drug rehab clinic, unfortunately, he never returned to his medical practice.

The Need for Excitement

Dr. G’s story was interesting for a number of reasons, but at a very basic level of analysis the problem was clear. To everyone else, Dr. G. had everything: power, financial resources, prestige, position, and respect and admiration from others. Apparently, however, there was one thing that Dr. G. didn’t have: excitement–something thrilling that would add zest to his life. Unfortunately, Dr. G. looked to drugs to provide the “high” his life was lacking. Apart from the unfortunate reality that Dr. G. never returned to his profession, there is something else that leaps out from this story that needs to be articulated.

Healthy Excitement Boosters

There is virtually an endless supply of healthy “excitement boosters” in our society that Dr. G. could have sampled. He could have planned ahead and made reservations to go to the World Series, Super Bowl, Kentucky Derby, Wimbledon tennis championship, NCAA college football championship, Masters Golf tournament, Indy 500, or to the “final four” in college basketball. He could have traveled throughout the world visiting his favorite places. He could have purchased a boat that would have allowed him to spend quality time fishing or cruising on his favorite lake. He could have learned how to play a musical instrument. He could have gone “back to his roots” by visiting where his parents or grandparents came from.

To add to these “fun generators,” Dr. G. could have started a hobby that he has been passionately interested in since he was a youth. Based on his musical tastes, he could have made arrangements to see his favorite groups or artists perform live and in concert. He could have learned how to snow ski, water ski, or ride a motorcycle. He could have set aside time each year to attend his favorite operas and performances by the best orchestras in the world. He could have learned how to fly a plane. He could have purchased season tickets for his favorite professional sporting events. He could have taken adult education classes for a subject matter that he has been passionately interested in since he was a young adult.

If even more options were needed to satisfy Dr. G’s need for excitement, he could have learned how to skydive. He could have researched a special topic in his profession that he didn’t have time for earlier in his career. He could have taken ballroom dancing classes. He could have purchased a motor home and traveled with other sightseers to various locations throughout the country. He could have become a “big brother” to troubled youth. He could have pursued political aspirations that he placed on hold for many years. He could have created a special garden retreat in his backyard. In a word, Dr. G. could have involved himself in an unlimited number of healthy activities that would have added more meaning and excitement to his life.

The Denial of Addiction

Instead of using his intellect and creativity to add “natural,” healthy “highs” to his life, Dr. G. took the course of least resistance that eventually led to his downfall. Ironically, moreover, Dr. G. was a member of the one profession that is most intimately associated with prescriptions and with the effects and side effects of drugs, namely medicine. Perhaps Dr. G. thought that his “special” medical knowledge would enable him to rise above and avoid the damaging effects of drugs. If so, then Dr. G. was in denial and out-of-touch with the realities of addiction. In the final analysis, however, Dr. G. should have known better than to involve himself in the negative spiral of drug addiction.

Conclusion

There are three main messages to be learned from Dr. G’s story. First, addiction to drugs or alcohol is an equal opportunity destroyer that affects all races, people from all occupations, religions, nationalities, socio-economic groups, and from all political parties. In a word, if an anesthesiologist can become addicted to drugs, virtually anyone can. Second, whoever is not involved in drug abuse or drug addiction should continue refraining from this destructive habit. And third, whoever is abusing drugs or addicted to drugs should get professional help as soon as possible.

E-Mail: The Big Time-Waster

Thursday, September 24th, 2009

Has e-mail taken control of your life? As a small business owner, I know e-mail rules my day. The first thing I do in the morning is check my e-mail and the last thing I do before I go to sleep is check my e-mail. In between, I am monitoring my e-mail like an air-traffic controller. I’m always watching for new mail and will stop what I’m working on when I receive a notice that new mail has arrived. This is just plain sick! Do they have a 12-step program for e-mail addicts?

E-Mail Wastes Time

The need to read e-mail throughout the day has become a big time-waster for companies. Most people have two or three e-mail accounts so that double or triples the time spent checking e-mails. A survey by America Online and Opinion Research discovered that 61% of people check their personal e-mail an average of three times a day while at work. Add in the time spent reading company e-mail and you’ve quadrupled the time spent with e-mail.

E-mail has taken over our lives at home and at work because it is not just a matter of reading the e-mails; we also need to respond to the e-mails. Sure we can delete the abundance of SPAM that clogs our in-boxes, but then we are left with the e-mail that demands a response. We have to take the time to slowly read the message, understand the message and then organize our thoughts to write a reply. This takes even more time.

E-Mail Miscommunication

Here’s where things take a free-fall and really eat up your time. If someone was standing in front of you and you were having a conversation, it would be easy to say what you wanted to say. You’d watch the body language, listen to the tone of voice and quickly know what to say and how to say it. But e-mail is just words; no body language and no voice tone. It’s actually one of the most difficult methods of communication because only 7% of a message is understood from the words we use; 93% of the understanding is from body language and voice tone.

So, not only is it difficult to figure out WHAT to say in an e-mail, it’s difficult to figure out HOW to say it right and not cause a miscommunication. You have no idea what the mindset will be of the person who will be reading your e-mail. He or she could have just had an argument or an incident of road rage before arriving to work and then starts reading your e-mail. What you thought was “constructive criticism” is now interpreted as a vicious remark to them personally. You’re in trouble now.

Let me replay this situation and imagine you chose to phone this individual rather than send an e-mail. As soon as he answered the phone you would hear in his voice something was wrong and the warning bells would go off in your head. There is no way you would offer your “constructive criticism” at this point. You’d choose another time when things were calm.

With e-mail you don’t get any “do-overs.” Once that message is sent, you are doomed. If there’s a miscommunication, you are stuck trying to make things right and wasting more time!

Get A Handle on E-Mail

Compare e-mail to a garage with tools laying around. You can’t park your car in the garage and you can barely walk through the garage without tripping. But, if you hang up the tools on the walls you can easily find the tools and what was chaos is now organized. Every tool has its place and you know where to find it.

You need to look at e-mail the same way. E-mail is a tool for communication; nothing more, nothing less. It’s not the sharpest tool in the toolbox, but it usually gets the job done. However, it’s not the only tool. Take a look at your other communication tools and see if they would do a better job.

Here are some guidelines to help you make better communication choices and prevent e-mail from being such a time-waster:

*If you are angry or if you think your message will make your reader angry or upset, don’t use e-mail. Use the phone or physically meet with the person. You want the advantage of body language and voice tone.

*Be sure to include all the information your reader needs to make a decision in your e-mail reply. Think about things from their perspective and imagine what they need to know. The more information you include, the less likely there will be miscommunication.

*Set aside specific times of the day to deal with your e-mail. If you want to deal with all your e-mail at the end of the day, consider setting up an autoresponder that tells people that’s what you do and that they can expect a response at the end of the day. If it is important they can phone you.

*Only handle an e-mail once. Open it up, read it, reply and file it into a specific folder. If you wait to get back to an e-mail you may have hundreds of e-mails to look through or even worse; not be able to find the right e-mail.

E-mail is a love-hate relationship that is here to stay. Although e-mail is our primary tool for business communication, it wastes time and can cause miscommunication. On the other hand, e-mail is a quick, easy way to communicate our message and I’d bet very few of us are willing to give up our addiction to it.

Hawaii Vacation Activities – Unlimited!

Wednesday, September 23rd, 2009

Yes, Hawaii is known for its great beaches. And true, there’s nothing quite like basking under the warm Hawaiian sun and feeling your cares drift away with each gentle wave that laps at your feet. But there’s a lot more to the Aloha State than soaking up some sun. You can get out and do something!

You can explore Hawaii on land, air or sea and take advantage of all the state has to offer.

For hikers, there are fabulous nature trails on every Hawaiian island, including treks for beginners and experts. On Maui, Haleakala is revered as one of the state’s best hiking spots. A favorite hike on Oahu is the 45-minute climb to the top of Diamond Head, where visitors are rewarded with sweeping views of Waikiki, Honolulu and the Pacific Ocean. On the Big Island, head to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park and take on the Kilauea Iki Trail, a five-mile adventure that begins at the Thurston Lava Tube.

If hiking is not your thing and you would rather pedal your way through Hawaii, you will not be left out. Haleakala offers a downhill ride that is very enjoyable in both exercise and scenery. Then there is the Garden of the Gods on Lanai. This looks like the surface of the moon with very colorful rocks.

Horseback riding is always a popular outdoor activity. Enjoy “happy trails” on the Big Island, where you can be a paniolo (cowboy) for a day at places like Parker Ranch, one of the largest ranches (175,000 acres) in the United States.

There is even skiing on Hawaii. Yes, you read right, skiing! The top of Mauna Kea will usually surprise you with snow from November to April. Be prepared, however, these slopes should be reserved for the most advance skiers. Amateurs should try something else on Hawaii.

And, of course, there is the ocean. This is an area that should not be overlooked. Believe it or not, some people have gone to the island and never stepped foot in the water! Gentle waves along with the shallow water make learning how to surf at Waikiki Beach perfect. Hanauma bay offers snorkeling while off Lanai’s south shore are the Cathedrals, which is a wonderful SCUBA diving location. Deep Sea fishing can be found off Kailua-Kona and the Tuna and Marlin are ready to be caught. If you would like to kayak, head on over to Kauai and go along the Napali Coast for some breath taking views.

To see all the beauty of Hawaii from the top, try hang gliding or helicopter at one of the many providers on the island. Oahu even has skydiving to offer you. There, a licensed instructor will show you how to not panic when you jump out of a plane at 13,000 feet so you can open your shoot on time. Do not worry, though, it will be a tandem jump, and if you do go blank, the instructor will pull the cord for you.

The list of outdoor activities goes on and on: camping, hunting, clay shooting, sailing, windsurfing, jogging, whale watching, parasailing and so much more. There’s a whole world of adventure awaiting you in the Hawaiian Islands. Just go for it!

Aviation: Having Fun in the Sky

Wednesday, September 23rd, 2009

Aviation in America has a long and glorious tradition dating all the way back to the days of the Wright Brothers. When these two men decided they would make a flying machine, most people thought they were insane. Man is not meant to fly, that is for the birds. It is impossible, physically and technically and it can never happen. But history has proven the doubters wrong time and again and aviation was no exception.

Now days, anyone can fly. Not only in a commercial plane but anyone with the right frame of mind and desire can learn how to fly themselves. It is not as hard as you might think. There are a slew of independent web sites that can have the wannabe pilot up and running in a very short time.

Most of these online schools cost anywhere from two thousand dollars all the way up to ten thousand. They range from eleven days to several weeks in length. Do some research into what works well with your schedule and decide the best fit before committing to anything. Also make sure they are an accredited school and your license will be much easier to get.

These classes are fun and informative. You start out by learning the technical aspects of flying, including the rules and regulations of airspace. These guidelines are important to understand when learning to fly. Next, you move on to hands-on interaction with certified instructors. You will learn the ins and outs of the cockpit and the entire plane itself. In order to fully know what you are doing, this approach is key. Be safe first and then have fun with your newly acquired skills.

Keep in mind that passing these first tests does not qualify you for flight. Gaining full status to fly is a longer process but a necessary one. A certain number of hours must be completed in the air before becoming a fully functioning member of the airborne, aviation community. Once this process is complete, your work is over and now the real fun begins.

So what can one do with an aviation license? What activities are fun and available to a fully licensed pilot? First is the possibility of owning your own plane. If you own your own plane, the possibilities for recreation are endless.

Where have you always wanted to go but could not because of time constraints and lack of money? When you are the pilot, no where is off limits. Been meaning to go to Ireland? Jamaica? No problem, since now you have your own plane and can fly there yourself.

Not to mention you bypass the headache everyone must face now in going to the airport. Why wait in line for hours and go through security checkpoints when you can take off whenever you want and go wherever you want? Flying can now become a fun, relaxing, educational experience rather than the excruciating pain it is now.

Another recreational activity that can be done with flying is skydiving. Skydiving is enjoyed by thousands of people each year. One of the most gratifying experiences is conquering your fear of heights, getting a rush from the free-fall or just plain doing something new and exciting.

For first time skydivers, tandem diving is recommended. With this method, you do not need to learn how to skydive at all but can still enjoy the feeling. A trained professional is connected to you while you jump and they do all the necessary work as you have all the fun. Sounds like a good combination? It is.

For other more seasoned skydivers, there is always the accelerated free-fall. In this method, a person can move faster towards their goal by completing this as a first jump and getting closer to full certification. This is for serious jumpers that intend to continue skydiving for some time.

So, all of this fun and excitement stems from the wonderful invention and profession of aviation. So many opportunities presented themselves when the first plane was flown. Whether one experiences it first hand by learning to fly and becoming a pilot or uses a plane to take a trip or to participate in a fun activity such as skydiving, everyone benefits from its practice.
